Ring Games and Songs
Songs and rhymes are more enjoyable when sung in groups with other children. Active involvement is especially important for young children. This supports development of social relationships and social norms, along with an understanding of how to cooperate with others, when participating in group games.
Below are some rhymes perfect for use at rhyme time sessions, circle times and group gatherings with young children.
Rig-A-Jig-Jig
Sandy Girl
Jumping Bean
One in the Middle

Rig-A-Jig-Jig
As I was walking,
Down the street,
Down the street,
Down the street,
A very good friend I chanced to meet,
Hi Ho, Hi Ho, Hi Ho.
Rig-a-jig-jig, and away we go
Away we go, away we go,
Rig-a-jig-jig and away we go,
Hi Ho, Hi Ho, Hi Ho
Sandy Girl
There was a little Sandy girl
Sitting on a stone
Crying and weeping because she's all alone
Stand up Sandy girl,
Dry your tears away,
Choose the one you love the most to dance, dance away,
Tra la la la la la la la la la la la la.

Jumping Bean
Oh (child's name) a jumping bean,
The biggest bean you've ever seen.
He/She can jump so high,
And almost touch the sky.
(Children form a circle and different children are selected to be the 'jumping beans')

One in the Middle
One in the middle
Jumping, jumping.
One in the middle,
Jumping, jumping.
One in the middle,
Jumping, jumping.
Jumping up and down.
Two in the middle,
Jumping, Jumping.
Two in the middle,
Jumping, jumping.
Two in the middle,
Jumping, jumping.
Jumping up and down.
Three in the middle....
(Children form a circle, one child is selected to jump in the center, and gradually all the children join in jumping)
