Internet Safety
The internet offers a range of educational opportunities, both through educational apps, online resources and virtual tutoring. Parents may take advantage of these avenues for learning, but subsequently, need to take the necessary steps to eliminate the dangers their child could be exposed to online. This can be done through teaching your child about internet safety, also referred to as e-safety.
Internet safety or e-safety involves educating and safeguarding young people in the digital world. Many children start accessing social media, via smartphones from an early age, which makes it crucial that they know how to stay safe online.
Your child will most likely learn about e-safety at school. However, it is advisable to also teach your child about e-safety at home, to ensure your child understands the rules for staying safe online.
E-safety rules to keep your child stay safe online:
1. Always ask before you go online.
2. Never tell strangers your name, address, phone number or school.
3. Never share your location with anyone.
4. Do not speak to anyone online who you don't know in real life.
5. Never send photos to anyone you don’t know.
6. Do not pretend to be older than you are.
7. Never arrange to meet anyone you meet online.
8. Tell a parent if you feel at all unhappy or uncertain about anything online.
There are many interactive websites, child centered videos and cartoons which teach your child about staying safe whilst having fun online.
The Hector's World website has a series of cartoons focusing on e-safety aspects for young children up to the age of six. The short cartoons are particularly appealing to young children, with the likeable characters, fun names and catchy tunes.
