Maths Stories

Teaching maths through story is a great way to incorporate numeracy into your child's routine. Children enjoy stories which provide a fun, relaxed atmosphere for learning. As well as developing maths skills, your child will gain a love of books, whilst learning new language patterns and vocabulary.

You can begin reading stories to your child at a very early age, particular books with simple language. For a pre-school child, young toddler or baby you could begin with simple stories, which introduce counting, such as '1, 2, 3 to the Zoo'. Children will often want to listen to a favourite story many times, which is beneficial in reinforcing mathematical language and new vocabulary.

The following stories can be used to teach and reinforce numeracy skills:

Bear Counts

By Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman

A delightful book which cleverly introduces numbers and counting to very young children. Wonderful illustrations coupled with the repetitive language, "Numbers Numbers everywhere', Can you count along with Bear?" Even the youngest of children delight in this well written story.

Handa's Hen

By Eileen Brown
An engaging story focusing on counting to ten, with characters, Handa and Akeyo, searching for their grandmother's Black Hen, Mondi. Repetition of the phrase 'But where's Mondi?' encourages active participation from the listeners. The story introduces exotic wildlife, from butterflies and bullfrogs to spoonbills and starlings, until eventually, Mondi the hen, is discovered with ten new chicks!

Trillions of Trees

A thoroughly enjoyable book incorporating humor, for both adults and children alike!  This rhyming story is perfect for children excited by the concept of big numbers! Billions of Bricks by the same author is also highly recommended!
